For most people giving up the day job and moving to a beautiful area of France and living off the vines is an impossible but delicious dream. In 1990, Patricia Atkinson and her husband decided to sell up in Britain and emigrate to the Dordogne. Their idea was to buy a house with a few vines attached and employ someone to tend to the wine while they earned their living with some financial consultancy work. There followed a series of disasters: the stock market crashed leaving their small holding as their sole source of income; the first red wine harvest turned to vinegar; and Patricia's husband returned to Britain, unable to cope with the stress and never returned. Patricia Atkinson, whose only knowledge of wine up to that moment was 'that it came from a bottle' and who had not a word of French, was left to salvage their life savings form the vineyards. What follows is a remarkable story of struggle and transformation whereby her tiny 4 hectare plot has become a major estate of 21 hectares, where her Clos d'Yvigne wines have won awards and been adopted by wine merchants throughout the world and where she has been hailed as a superstar by UK wine writers.

An extremely cold winter, with snow on the Montagne de Reims, gave way to an unexpected warm spell with moderate rain showers. A little frost was noted in the most vulnerable areas. Spring was early and wet, while May was particularly hot and dry. Rain at the end of June did not affect flowering, which took place under excellent, nearly heat wave, conditions. Rain and hot weather alternated at the beginning of summer, encouraging the vines to grow rapidly. August was dry and sunny, perfect for ripening the grapes. After a grey and cloudy two weeks at the beginning of September, the weather turned, providing the ideal dry climate to harvest the grapes, which were in superb condition. The basic blend is made up of 64% Pinot Noir grapes from the Grands Crus at Ay, in the Vallee de la Marne, and at Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay and Bouzy in the Montagne de Reims. The blend also includes 36% Chardonnay grapes from three Grands Crus: Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Cote des Blancs. La Grande Dame 1998 has a pale gold colour with jade glints. The wine is crystal clear, with unbelievably fine bubbles. On the first nose, typical Chardonnay characteristics come to the fore, with the arrival of floral and mineral aromas (acacia, ferns, chalk). By agitating the wine, scents of candied fruit (citrusfruits, apricots, quince) and sweet almond emerge, to reappear later in the mouth. After rotating the wine for a few minutes more, rare notes such as peaty malt, tobacco and delicate herbs, are gradually unveiled. This aromatic, impressively complex bouquet is confirmed in the mouth. On the palate, the wine is clear-cut and pure, perfectly balanced with a delightful silky smoothness. La Grande Dame 1998, with its lacelike construction, has a long, lively, and structured finish. This wine has unbelievable ageing potential. The 1998 vintage of La Grande Dame, the quintessence of the Veuve Clicquot style, reaches a peak of refinement, without losing its legendary strength produced by a blend including nearly two-thirds of Pinot Noir.

Jim Clendenen managed to lose himself in Burgundy whilst holidaying after his graduation from law school back in the seventies. What a relief he turned his back on law and immediately started making wine as he's produced some of the most exciting wines to come out of California. His winery, Au Bon Climat (translated as 'a well exposed vineyard') produces a range of Burgundian-inspired Pinots and Chardonnays as well as a whole bunch of experimental wines that regularly gain plaudits and awards. Santa Maria Valley is situated on the Central Coast of California, closer to LA than San Fran (and home to the Pinot Noir love-story 'Sideways'). It's cooler in climate and has less rainfall. This helps to extend the ripening season and builds complexity and intensity in Pinot Noir. The ABC Santa Maria Pinot is beautifully fragrant, delivers lots of body and silky textures with a ripe finish. Simply a very well made, balanced wine that is an absolute delight.
