This copy comes from the 1957 reprint of the book first issued in 1953. It is composed of articles contributed by a number of mainly academic authors (listed on introductory pages xv and xvi) edited and arranged by B.V. Bowden. The plain dark blue full cloth covers are complete and undamaged apart from slight folding at the corners and the top and bottom of the spine. The front and back covers also have some white discolouration and spotting. The front cover carries the oval trademark of the publisher in gold and the spine carries the title, editor and publisher in gold print. The binding is complete with all pages appearing to be fully attached. All pages, including the end-papers, appear to be undamaged and clean apart from a dark stain at the bottom of the book which extends slightly on to the faces of pages 91 to 133. The 18 monochrome plates and two inserts are all present and undamaged.
