This beautiful golden spirit's nose releases honeyed nuts and a slightly sea-induced salty tang. Rich toffee and leathery oak aromas can be sensed upon further inspection. The palate is influenced by mellow sherried nuts and shavings of the finest natural oak wood. The voyage ends with dry notes that are interspersed with mixed spices fading magnificently into a light salt and sherry finale. Un-chillfiltered.

Bushmills Malt has a sweet spicy aroma with overtones of Oloroso sherry, vanilla and honey. The exceptional richness of The Dalmore spirit benefits from slightly longer maturation than is typically practised in Scotland. So their youngest expression is bottled only after twelve years, rather than the more usual ten. Their Master Blender, with some four decades of expertise, has discovered that the complex spirit from the stills is too rich to be tamed by a single style of cask. He favours fusing together the sweet, vanilla rich whiskies from ex-bourbon barrels with the aromatic, spicy and dried fruits characters from sherry casks from Spain. In this, our entry level expression we have sought balance and richness by selecting malts in a 50:50 recipe - 50% from ex bourbon barrels and 50% from ex-sherry butts.

The whisky, rather discrete from a strictly commercial point of view, is very attractive from the very first nosing. An impression of lightness, together with some spice hints. The taste confirms the first impression. A rather pleasant whisky. A finish of average length prolongs the pleasure for some too short minutes. The second tasting confirmed the rather pleasant character of this whisky, and the finish seemed longer than the first time. A rather strong and long aftertaste on malt notes remains for a while in the palate, and the pleasant spicy taste disappears slowly. The nose is slightly spiced with a discrete hint of smoke. In the palate, this whisky is quite pleasant, but not really wonderful. The taste is rather complex but a bit dry and with a certain lack at personality. The finish is pleasant.

One of the very successful Glenmorangie 'wood finishes'. A remarkable malt, antique gold in colour: golden but with a rosy hue. This whisky has been matured for at least 12 years in American white oak casks and racked for several years into Ruby Port pipes for 'finishing'. Malt that's matured as normal in traditional American white oak ex-bourbon casks is then transfered into casks that used to hold fine port for a final period of maturation. The end result is a malt whisky with the colour of antique copper and a unique taste. Add a drop of water and the aromas you get predominate with butterscotch and dark chocolate. But there are also fresh minty notes and a certain dryness a bit like lint. The mouth-feel is really smooth, like 'sipping velvet', now that might be taking it a bit far, but it is voluptuously smooth. Perfect after a good meal, but it's such a fine, if slightly different, Glenmorangie that why wait until after dinner?

Riserva 15 Anni is a prestigious bottling created to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the Nardini distillery in Bassano del Grappa. Launched in 2004, it became the first new product to be introduced by the distiller in 76 years. Aged for fifteen years in Slovanian oak, the grappa is soft and intense, with complex flavours bolstered by the remarkably long ageing period. Some say it is redolent of an Amagnac or even an Islay malt. Either way, it is very much a post-prandial grappa combining extremely well with strong dark cigars (wherever you may be allowed to do that sort of thing) Appearance: Deep golden colour, with amber reflections. Bouquet: Fragrant, distinct and full with overtones of wood and resin. Palate: Soft, intense and slightly sweet, complex aftertaste with hints of spice, vanilla and tobacco.
