Book Description : 1894, 1st Edition; both volumes in hardback, one in blue cloth, the other in green making up the complete text of 699 pages in all with illustrations; near Good. Though books had been written about the Orient and Japan before, they tended towards a mere passing acquaintance of the Japanese and their country. The Englishman, Lafcadio Hearn, spent four years living the life of a Japanese, and kept a diary of his experiences within their culture. The 27 "sketches" which comprise these volumes offer a perceptive and balanced study of Japanese life and how it is lived from the inside through the eyes of a Westerner. Hearn's considered and evocative accounts of various aspects of Japanese life, cover such experiences as Buddhist practice, household gods and shrines; ghosts and goblins; geishas, festivals and banquets; the protocols for communicating; education; the art of the Japanese garden, and more besides. Though Hearn was greatly enamoured of the Japanese way of living, sometimes favouring it over the European, his narratives are written with equipoise and refreshingly free of any self-delusion. Book Condition : near Good : bumping to head and foot of spine cloth; slight denting of corner tips; cloth at spines slightly sunned; only a modicum of wear to titling which is however intact and very legible; slight fraying to cloth at edge corners (Vol.1); Vol.1 shows shelfwear to edges and there are a few slight stains to covers; the cloth of Vol 2. is in good shape generally; except for endpapers and title pages which are tanned, inside pages are only mildly yellowed; Vol.1 has occasional fairly minor thumb smudging effect to margin areas and occasional patch tanning; there are also a few top corner edge creases to the pages of Vol.1; the binding to both volumes is cracked in 6 to 7 or so places but nothing is loose and all holding; otherwise binding secure and sound; private library stamp to title page of Vol.1; 2 labels to ffeps of Vol.1, and 1 to Vol.2 at tops of pages.
