This piece was commissioned in 1991 by Graham Ashton for his album 'The Contemporary Trumpet'.Quoting Graham Ashton: Michael Nyman wrote Flugel and Piano for me during a period when I felt his approach to the writing and recording of his music was changing quite considerably. I had given him very few guidelines as I did not want to restrict his writing. I knew the result would be a difficult piece, as Michael had often said he likes to hear the performer 'fighting' the instrument. Flugel and Piano is a fight for a couple of reasons: firstly, the flugel does not like being played in the key of D sharp minor, especially with a Trombone 'bucket mute' - unfortunately, this was all that I could find to fit over the larger Flugel bell; secondly, the Flugel enjoys being flat at the top register, making top Cs and Ds a nightmare! Michael's reaction on hearing the recording was that he found the piece surprisingly emotional.

The author Sir Tam Dalyell was MP for Linlithgow for over forty years, and Father of the House from 2001 to 2005, succeeding Sir Edward Heath. Written in 1960 when he was a schoolteacher in Central Scotland, his book deals with three groups of problems. Firstly, it enquires into the fundamental causes of dissatisfaction over the education of 14-15 years-old in state schools. As a basis for discussion, the book offers the possibility of wide scale 4 - 6 month courses, organised as a strenuous and unholiday-like educational activity, aboard ship-schools going as far as Malta and the West Indies. It attempts to give an answer to the question 'how does one persuade non-academic young men that schooling is worth their while?' Secondly, the book is written in the belief that at the highly impressionable age of 15, shared work, shared learning, and shared fun make men forget what colour or what race they are: that ship-school courses would be one positive step in the direction of mutual understanding between people of all backgrounds. Thirdly, the book raises the problem of the economic consequences of disarmament. How can Western politicians disarm when the withdrawal of billions of dollars from defence expenditure would probably mean seriously large unemployment. Far from being a burden on the nation's exchequer, costly projects such as ship-schools would be a boon to those who would like to halt the perilous arms race. By substituting expenditure to these projects for expenditure on ever more efficient weapons of mutual annihilation, governments could help solve the very human problems of redundancy, as well as tackling the task of realising disarmament. The book is in good condition for its age with only a few marks and small tears on the jacket.
