Each song illustrates how solo players approach the guitar like a piano, playing melodies and bass lines simultaneously. Developing this independent two-line picking technique enables you to get the feel, syncopation, and subtleties of the music. The songs in themselves are studies in acoustic blues technique and present the authentic elements of the acoustic blues sound and style including blues technique and ways to 'play off' of the chords and improvise within a song. This program is recommended for beginning acoustic blues guitarists as well as electric guitarists and acoustic fingerstyle guitarists of all levels who would like to go beyond 'pattern' picking and develop a more dynamic and syncopated sound. Woody Mann had his first schooling as a teenager in the living room of Rev. Gary Davis, the now legendary gospel and ragtime guitarist. Mann soon went on to perform and record with blues masters Son House and Bukka White as well as contemporary innovators including John Fahey. He has recorded extensively, performed throughout the world, and is widely recognized as one of the world's leading teachers and transcribers of acoustic blues music, having taught countless guitarists through his popular books and videos.

Gary Davis used to tell his students that playing the guitar was easy. He would say that a piano player has only two hands (the left keeps an alternating bass while the right plays a melody) but a guitarist has three hands! Our right hand thumb is one hand and plays the bass figures while our index finger is our second hand and plays the melody. Our third hand is our left hand which fingers chords. The results produce a full and orchestrated fingerstyle sound with a rhythmic bass played against melodic lines. This is the alternating bass technique which we sometimes jokingly refer to as 'bum-chick.' It is the most popular fingerpicking style played and has been used by legendary guitarists. Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, Merle Travis, Doc Watson, Chet Atkins are but a few of the giants of this style.On these two DVDs we will explore how to master the alternating bass style. The Guitar Artistry of Stefan Grossman brings together performances from 1965 to today. Stefan Grossman performs solo, with the Even Dozen Jog Band, with John Renbourn as well as Duck Baker. In between the music Stefan weaves together the story behind his playing. Guitarist, educator and historian Stefan Grossman was a student of acoustic blues and gospel singer/guitarist Rev. Gary Davis. Beginning when he was 15, Stefan studied with Davis on weekends, spending eight to ten hours at his house in Harlem, absorbing all he could. While studying with Rev. Davis he met and studied with other country blues guitarists: Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Skip James, Mance Lipscomb and Fred Mc Dowell.In the early 1960s, Stefan formed the Even Dozen Jug Band (which also included such future luminaries as John Sebastian, Steve Katz, Maria Muldaur and David Grisman). In 1966 he worked with the alternate rock band the Fugs before moving to Great Britain in 1967. In 1969, he co-founded Kicking Mule Records with Ed Denson, a label that showcased acoustic fingerstyle guitar. Many of these albums that Stefan produced during this period are finally being re-released on CD on his own label.From 1967 to 1987, Stefan Grossman lived in Great Britain and Italy and toured worldwide. He performed and recorded with John Renbourn for 15 years and they produced four albums together.Stefan's solo discography goes all the way back to 1966, when he recorded How to Play Blues Guitar with Rory Block (now released as Country Blues Guitar SGGW103). Since that time he has recorded over 30 solo albums and has written numerous books highlighting the playing of legendary bluesmen from the 1920s and 1930s.Nowadays Stefan divides his time between the USA and England. He continues to do concerts and workshops worldwide and remains one of the world's foremost authorities on acoustic blues guitar.The Guitar Artistry of Stefan Grossman brings together performances from 1965 to today.
