BOOK DESCRIPTION : 2 Volumes professionally rebound as a blue cloth hardback into 1 Volume comprising : 1780, 3rd Edition of the Lives of Latimer & Gilpin, and 1784, 1st Edition of the Life of Thomas Cranmer; 368 pages with tables of contents, & 235 pages with table of contents and a preface; VG. The 18th century clergyman, William Gilpin, is best known for being an inventor of the picturesque art movement which was in some ways a precursor to the Gothic and Romantic movements of the 19th century. With the biographies in this volume, however, he gives a narration of the eventful lives of significant religious figures in the tumultous times of Henry VIII, Edward IV, and Queen Mary when prominent views in religious affairs could either win favour or imperil a speaker's temporal existence. Both Latimer and Cranmer were particular prominent figures in the years of English Reformation in the reign of Henry VIII. Although both were essentially different in character they were to share a similar fate of being graced by Henry VIII in the days of the Reformation but were both later to suffer the dreadful fate of being burnt at the stake by the ruthless Queen Mary for ostensibly religious persuasions. Today, Cranmer's legacy still holds for his eternally popular, poetic, and spiritual translation into English of the texts that make up the Book of Common Prayer. The theologian Bernard Gilpin of the 16th century kept a lower profile but was generally applauded for his good deeds in matters of misfortune, education, and liberal hospitality. William Gilpin's aim with these biographies is to bring the characters to life with plenty of quotes and scenarios. His tribute to these religious figures for their meritorious conduct and virtue is tempered by his acknowledgement of their all too human foibles. BOOK CONDITION : VG : apart from slight bowing to boards, and very mild rubbing to cloth, the exterior of the book is in very good shape; the inside pages are in very good order with only : mild toning to pages, very minor and very infrequent hints of foxing; very minor, infrequent, and small areas of waterstaining; the binding is strong and secure.
