Collection of eight modern war films. 'Platoon' (1986) tells the story of a young innocent 19-year-old soldier, Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen), who is thrown headfirst into the bloody Vietnam conflict. He is forced to fight not only the Viet Cong, but also his own fears and intense anger. As a result of not being able to make any progress against the enemy, the soldiers, led by the strict and unsympathetic Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger), are forced to turn their anger and guns on each other. Barnes also has a personal battle with fellow officer Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe), who is the more understanding and compassionate of the two officers and helps Sheen to cope with his personal problems. 'The Thin Red Line' (1998) is set in 1942 and was Terrence Malick's first film for 20 years. As US soldiers land on the island of Guadalcanal, hoping to capture it from the Japanese, the job of venturing into the jungle falls to the 'C for Charlie' company and the troops are faced by both the enemy and struggles within their own camp. The war takes a heavy toll upon the young soldiers, leading them on a path of disillusion and possibly death. 'Behind Enemy Lines' (2001) is inspired by the story of Scott O'Grady, the US fighter pilot who was shot down over Bosnia in 1995 and managed to find his way back to base without being captured. After photographing some Bosnian Serb troops hidden in a forest, Lieutenant Chris Burnett (Owen Wilson) and his co-pilot Stackhouse (Gabriel Macht) are shot down by an anti-aircraft missile. Stackhouse breaks his leg in the crash, and Burnett goes off to get help, but the Serbs soon locate Stackhouse and execute him. Burnett now finds himself alone in hostile country and sets out on the long and dangerous journey back to safety. Meanwhile, his commanding officer (Gene Hackman), against all army and NATO rules, sets out on a mission to locate and rescue Burnett. In 'Courage Under Fire' (1996), Lieutenant Colonel Nat Serling (Denzel Washington), suffering from guilt after destroying one of his own tanks in a 'friendly fire' incident during the Gulf War, is assigned to investigate the death of Captain Karen Walden (Meg Ryan). Walden died in action, but accounts of her actions vary and so Serling has to discover the truth before she can be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honour. At the same time he has to come to terms with his own traumatic experiences in the Gulf. 'Rescue Dawn' (2006) tells the true story of downed Vietnam pilot Dieter Deng

Set of five classic war films. 'The Bridge On the River Kwai' (1957) is David Lean's classic British epic based on the novel by Pierre Boulle. A group of British POWs are forced to build a bridge in Burma for the Japanese. Led by Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) they not only build the bridge but organise the whole building programme and are proud of the final result. However, unbeknownst to the POWs, a British commando team has been given a mission to destroy it. In 'Sands of Iwo Jima' (1949), hard-bitten sergeant John M. Stryker (John Wayne) earns the enmity of the recruits he trains for action in the Pacific. New recruit Peter Conway's (John Agar) dislike for his commander turns to respect, however, when the latter saves him from a grenade. The squad are forced to show their mettle when they are sent into Iwo Jima to take Mount Suribachi whilst under constant fire from the Japanese. John Wayne's performance earned him his first Oscar nomination. 'The Guns of Navarone' (1961), set in 1943, tells of a group of mismatched Allied soldiers who are sent to sabotage two powerful Nazi guns situated on a Greek island. If their mission fails, the guns will wipe out the 2,000 British soldiers who are attempting to evacuate civilians further down the coast. The mission is led by the dispassionate Captain Mallory (Gregory Peck), whose clinical approach does not find favour with explosives expert Corporal Miller (David Niven). Meanwhile, the group's Greek patriot guide Andrea Stavros (Anthony Quinn) is nursing a grudge against Mallory for an old injustice. 'All Quiet On the Western Front' (1930) is Lewis Milestone's epic screen adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's anti-war novel starring Lew Ayres as one of a group of German teenagers who enlist for World War I after hearing a stirring speech from their professor. They soon discover that war is less about noble ideas and sacrifice than it is about pain, humiliation, suffering and death. Wolfgang Petersen directs 'Das Boot' (1981), a gripping account of a German U-96 submarine in action during World War Two. The crew's long periods of boredom are contrasted with the claustrophobic terror they experience when engaging the enemy.

In 'The Fighting Seabees' (1944), tough construction foreman Wedge Donovan (Wayne) is posted to the South Pacific in 1942 to repair installations close to the Japanese lines. The bullheaded Wedge helps set up a Construction Batallion (or 'Seabee'), but discovers the need for military instruction when his men come under fire. Meanwhile, he finds romance with his commander's daughter - reporter Constance Chesley (Susan Hayward). In the American propaganda movie 'Flying Tigers' (1942), made soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and featuring many Japanese warplanes being blown out of the sky, squadron Leader Gordon (Wayne) commands the US Flying Tigers squad against Japan's fleet of bombers. However, resentment grows amongst his team when one pilot's glory-seeking efforts place the mission at risk. In 'Back to Bataan' (1945), Wayne plays Colonel Joseph Madden, who helps liberate the Japanese prison camp Cabanatuan on the island of Bataan, only to remain there in order to organise a guerilla movement against the enemy. Freedom fighters led by Captain Anders (Anthony Quinn) help the Americans in their war against the Japanese. 'Jet Pilot' (1957) is set at the height of the Cold War, when relations between the United States of America and the Soviet Union are frosty to say the least. However, ace American pilot Colonel Shannon (Wayne) finds himself thawing a little when he meets Anna, a beautiful young woman from the wrong side of the Iron Curtain. Shannon attempts to curb his desires for the sake of national security, but a cross-cultural romance between the pair soon ensues. Finally, in 'The Flying Leathernecks' (1951), tough disciplinarian Major Dan Kirby (Wayne) is put in charge of a marine fighter squadron in the South Pacific - but he proves to be unpopular with the men, who were expecting the more popular Captain Carl Griffin (Robert Ryan) to be promoted. Parachuting into the enemy territory in German uniforms, the squad discover one of their number dead on arrival, and Smith suspects that he may have a traitor amongst his unit. In 'Kelly's Heroes' (1970), during World War Two in occupied France, a group of soldiers led by Kelly (Clint Eastwood) capture a German general. He reveals the location of a bank housing 14,000 bars of Nazi gold, which Kelly and his men set out to steal. The only problem is that the bank lies thirty miles behind enemy lines. In 'Memphis Belle' (1990), the crew of the USAF bomber 'Memphis Belle', stationed in Britain during World War II, are preparing for their record-breaking 25th daylight mission. The mission will be as dangerous as ever, but if they survive they will return to the States as heroes. Collection of five classic war epics. 'Battle of the Bulge' (1965) is an account of Germany's last major European offensive of World War II at the Ardennes in Belgium, in December 1944. Germany, under the command of Hessler (Robert Shaw), plans an attack with the secret Panzer division, but they are desperately short of fuel and their immediate objective is to capture a big allied fuel deposit, without the allies knowing. Henry Fonda, Robert Ryan and Dana Andrews co-star. 'Escape to Victory' (1981) focuses on a group of Nazi officers who come up with a propaganda event in which an all-star Nazi football team will play a match against Allied Prisoners of War. The prisoners agree, planning on using the game as a means of escape from the camp. Lee Ermey). The second half of the film follows one of the recruits, Joker (Matthew Modine), onto the battlefield as he is thrown into the war at the height of the Tet Offensive.
