The extraordinary story of the German foreign ministry official who, at risk to his life, spied for the Allies in the Second World War. During the Second World War Fritz Kolbe worked as a Foreign Ministry official in Germany. He hated the Nazi regime, and in an attempt to aid its demise he offered to spy for free for the Allied forces. The Americans assigned him the code name 'George Wood' and between 1943 and 1945, at great risk to his life, he smuggled more than 1,600 top secret Nazi documents - from details of military tactics to reports on missile developments and plans to deport Jews to the death camps. Miraculously escaping detection by the Gestapo, he continued to work as an informer until the final days of the war, influencing the outcome of a number of conflicts. When the war ended, Kolbe's efforts were not officially recognized by the Allies. Denied a visa to the US, he was ostracized by his colleagues at the German Foreign Ministry where he was branded a traitor. He later moved to Switzerland where he became a salesman for a US power tools company, dying in obscurity in 1971. His extraordinary story has remained hidden until four years ago, when the CIA de-classified nearly 500,000 documents, many of which detail Kolbe's exploits. Using previously unseen archival material, Lucas Delattre has pieced together the extraordinary story of perhaps the Second World War's most important spy.

When on July 20, 1944 a bomb - boldly placed inside the Wolf's Lair (Hitler's headquarters in East Prussia) by the German Anti-Nazi Resistance - exploded without killing the Fuhrer, the subsequent coup d'etat against the Third Reich collapsed. The conspirators were summarily shot or condemned in show trials and sadistically hanged. Unfortunately, the image (initiated by Hitler himself) of a small, inept faction of disgruntled generals desperate to delay defeat has prevailed in the public's mind. The reality of the conspiracy, which involved a wide circle of former politicians, diplomats, and government officials as well as senior military men, is far more dramatic. The Resistance, largely motivated by moral outrage than by political expediency, had started as early as 1933 and involved several putsches and assassination attempts.One of the most active plotters, and later a prosecution witness at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, Hans B. Gisevius (1904-1974) used his positions in the Gestapo and the Abwehr (military intelligence) to further the anti-Nazi conspiracy.He knew well or met the major figures - including Beck, Canaris, Oster, Goerdeler, and von Stauffenberg - and barely escaped after the coup's failure. One of the few survivors of the German Anti-Nazi Resistance, Gisevius traces its history, from the 1933 Reichstag fire to Germany's defeat in 1945, in a book as riveting as it is exceptional.

Ramming techniques were perfected alongside the development of human bombs bullets and torpedoes as the suicide tactics struck terror into the hearts of men trying to survive - by men wishing to die. It was the suicide pilots dubbed black edged cherry blossoms who were the most feared in this savage area. Captured within this rare archive footage is the nightmare chaos of the Pacific War the air thick with tracer bullets and belching smoke as the sea foamed with devastating destruction. Although the Banzai tactics eventually led to mass suicide amongst the Japanese and the gradual depletion of men and machines resulted in defeat - the American navy had been forced into retreat by the horrific onslaught. They and the rest of the world had witnessed the Samurai mentality where a whole nation from the Emperor downwards was honoured to die for their cause.Disc 2 Gestapo - Hitler's Secret Police The very name of Hitler's secret police has become synonymous with the rule of terror that under Heinrich Himmler first maintained and then extended the Fuhrer's iron grip on Germany and its people. Waging relentless war on political dissidents disaffected citizens and religious minorities alike the Gestapo's tactics of torture interrogation and summary execution bolstered Hitler's crumbling regime to the last and established a reputation for brutality and oppression that would endure long after the last Gestapo commandment met his fate at the gallows.Disc 3 Hitler's Secret Weapons As the Second World War progressed the race for scientific intelligence secrecy and detection brought a new dimension to warfare. The pilot-less flying bomb or V1 emerged as the first of Hitler's new weapons and for a brief but terrifying period rained death and destruction on the south of England until the RAF and anti-aircraft gunners learnt to counter the terrible Doodlebug. With Allies closing in from the West and Eastern Front crumbling Hitler realised Germany was losing the war and his response was to give top priority to the V2. Against the background of the famous campaigns which led to his eventual defeat this DVD shows spectacular archive footage of Hitler's secret armoury as it was being developed tested and finally used in anger.
