It's difficult to believe that Canadian singer songwriter Sarah Mc Clachlan has been releasing albums for over 20 years but this long overdue Greatest Hits collection serves as reminder of the depth of her work and her incredible vocal range.The collection covers her career pretty much chronologically; beginning with Vox from the 1988 critically acclaimed debut Touch and then moving straight on to her better known albums. It was 1991's Solace which allowed her to break into the Canadian mainstream chart and from this album we have The Path of Thorns and Into The Fire.From 1993's Fumbling Towards Ecstacy there are Possession Good Enough and the haunting Hold On. This album was to become her international breakthrough and stay in the middle range of pop charts around the world for almost two years.It was however 1997's Surfacing which was to become a smash hit earning her two Grammys and four Juno Awards. Selling over 11 million copies worldwide it was even noted as having been mentioned in conversations between Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. Surfacing featured perhaps her best known song Angel inspired by the fatal overdose of Smashing Pumpkins touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin and showcasing the sheer beauty of Mc Clachlan's voice. A perfect fit for the 1998 film City of Angels the film's success kept the song at No.1 in the Billboard Chart and it was still in the top 40 five months after the film's release.Three other tracks from the Surfacing album feature here; the huge opening track Building A Mystery Sweet Surrender and Adia.Following the success of this album and with the huge success of Lillith Fair (an all female concert tour which Mc Clachlan had founded having become frustrated with the restrictions on playing two female musicians in succession) she took a hiatus from recording. However she did release the 1999 live album Mirrorball which included the track I Will Remember You which had featured in 1996's Rairities B-Sides and Other Stuff.Fallen Stupid and World On Fire are taken from Mc Clachlan's fifth studio album 2003's Afterglow. Though it didn't reach the unimaginable success of Surfacing it earned her five Juno Award nominations and a Grammy nomination and went two times platinum.All of the obvious song choices are included here and as both introduction and tribute this collection serves her well. However with such a huge catalogue to choose from there could have been so much more and newcomers to Mc Clachlan should check out her live albums rairities collection and the Christmas album Wintersong.
