The lobby is small and traditional with the main feature being the iron and stone "Battle Staircase", so called because of the hand-painted nameplates of famous British battles set into the wrought-iron rails. The hotel boasts a Star Chamber room with 4 tapestries depicting the seasons, which was originally at the Court of Westminster and is a unique feature. Previously owned by the Earl of Derby - who raced his horses along the coastal mud flats - it is believed the hotel is the site of the original 'Derby' horserace. An attractive alternative to staying in the city centre, Leasowe Castle has good rail and road links to the heart of Liverpool. Also has great connections with all local golf clubs and the hotel is happy to arrange all golfing details for your duration. Leisure facilities available free of charge to all residents. The rooms are in good condition and very traditional in design. Each one is individually designed exuding character and good taste. All rooms are ensuite, with all the facilities one would expect of a higher end 3 star hotel. There is a traditional fine dining restaurant which serves excellent locally produced food. The hotel has an excellent reputation for food and is extremely popular with local diners and a wedding destination.

The recording (originally released on Metronome and later on a Storyville CD) was made in the recording studio in Copenhagen in 1965. The four extra tunes are from a radio broadcast the same year, with a different rhythm group. Besides Svend Asmussen, both sessions also feature another major jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli, who first played with Asmussen in 1938. The musical material consists of popular swing standards by Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and George Gershwin, among others, plus one be-bop tune by Bud Powell.Svend Asmussen plays here with all the elegance, charm and perfection that have been the trademark of his music for many, many years. Two of the top jazz violin-pros in the business, Grappelli and Asmussen obviously enjoy each other's playing and respect each other as musicians. More than 35 years after his death Ben Webster's music remains fresh, contemporary and original; his distinctive sound still enchants and engages at each listening. The American tenor saxophonist came to Europe in 1964, at the relatively late age of 55, and never returned to the States. Webster had previously put off coming to Europe because of his intense fear of flying but when he finally arrived he was soon crowned King of Tenors by the thousands of fans who gave him their love and respect. Although he longed for his musical roots in the US he never went back; not only because of his fear of flying - he liked being in Europe. This 8CD box set has more than 10 hours of Ben Webster's music including previously unreleased tracks. The sessions were recorded mainly between 1964 and 1973 in Europe, mostly in Scandinavia, and include live recordings from festivals, clubs and radio and television broadcasts. They feature Webster at Copenhagen's famous Montmartre club and other Danish locations as well as sessions from his renowned month-long residency at London's Ronnie Scott's (his first job in Europe). Completing the set are recordings from Finland, Sweden, Belgium, Germany and several tracks recorded before he left New York. Webster is heard in various settings - from trios to big bands - in the company of contemporaries including Teddy Wilson, Clark Terry, Buck Clayton and Dexter Gordon. The booklet is illustrated with some great photos of Webster and gives a very personal insight from his closest friends and associates into his life and loves, his music and the colourful anecdotes that arose everywhere this remarkable musician went.
