Writerdirector Quentin Tarantino revisits the seedier side of Los Angelesfollowing 1992s Reservoir Dogs with this funny violent tongueincheek tribute to the less classic side of filmmaking the potboilers and capers the Blaxploitation flicks and gangster movies. The first story focuses on Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) two hit men on duty for the big boss Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) whose gorgeous wife Mia (Uma Thurman) takes a liking to Vincent. In the second a downandout pugilist (Bruce Willis) who is ordered to take a fall decides that theres more money in doing the opposite. The final chapter follows a pair of lovers (Amanda Plummer and Tim Roth) as they prepare to hold up a diner. Tarantino wears his cinematic influences proudly bringing them to life in the ironically hip selfreferential 1990s. The result is a work that changed the face of independent cinema forever making it a legitimate player in the Hollywood mainstream. The allstar cast steps into their roles with obvious glee and Tarantino once again uses his soundtrack to up the cool ante yet another notch making for a motion picture event that has worked its way into our national vernacular. This animated mock documentary directed by Chris Buck (Tarzan) and Ash Brannon (Toy Story 2) follows penguin Cody Maverick (Shia La Beouf) from his hometown of Shiverpool Antarctica where all of the other penguins think hes a surfing fool to the Big Z Memorial Surf Off on Pen Gu Island. This teenage penguin is determined to win the most important competition in the world of penguin surfing in honour of Big Z a deceased surfing legend whom he has idolised since childhood. But the waves in Pen Gu are different than in Shiverpool and the competition is steep. The current champ egotistical Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader) isnt about to let this little penguin knock him from first place without a fight. When Cody wipes out and encounters Geek (Jeff Daniels) a recluse living in the jungle he learns some important lessons about life and surfing and even teaches Geek a thing or two. The documentary/reality show format is a delightful surprise and side interviews with other characters make it particularly effective. The attention to detail in this feature is terrific. The foam waves sand expressions and movements are all quite realistic and the voices are spot on. Shia La Beouf hits the mark perfectly as Cody and Jeff Daniels is fun as the aging former surfer Geek who imparts his wisdom to the newbie. Mario Cantone voices the perpetually exasperated talent scout Mikey who works for sports promoter Reggie (James Woods). Jon Heder and Zooey Deschanel also lend their talents as midwestern surfer dude Chicken Joe and the lovely lifeguard Lani respectively. Sports Penguin Entertainment Network (Spen) correspondents Kelly Slater and Rob Machado are voiced by their reallife surfinglegend counterparts. A soundtrack including a number of past pop hits is also a nice touch. Contains 1 disc. Cert PG.

With its sweet teen coupling and ardent devotion to music Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist feels like the cinematic equivalent of a mixtape made by John Hughes and Cameron Crowe. But the film is actually directed by Peter Sollett who earned praise for his debut feature Rasing Victor Vargas. This studioproduced comedy is a bit shinier and more polished but it still has hints of the authenticity that made his first film so well loved. Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist centres on two New Jersey teens newly single Nick (Michael Cera Juno) and his fellow music lover Norah (Kat Dennings Charlie Bartlett) who meet at Nicks bands show in New York City. Their very long night in the city is driven by two searches: one for a secret concert by their favourite band Wheres Fluffy; and a second for Norahs irresponsible and drunk friend Caroline (Ari Graynor in what should be a starmaking performance). The pair bounce through the streets of New York in Nicks Yugo and his bandmates van bonding over their shared love of music while their exes threaten their new romance. Based on a young adult novel by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist makes an able leap to the screen. Dennings and Cera are likeably awkward in their tentative courtship but much of the praise should go to music supervisor Linda Cohen and composer Mark Mothersbaugh. Cohen picks ofthemoment bands such as Vampire Weekend Takka Takka We Are Scientists and Band of Horses that are sure to make the soundtrack as big a hit as the film while Mothersbaugh perfectly complements Nick and Norahs sweet romance with his fun yet unobtrusive score.
