The War File - Kamikaze: To Die For The Emperor

    £5.85

Named after the divine wind which had twice intervened to prevent invasion by the armies of Kublai Kahn in the 13th Century, the Kamikaze pilots symbolised the extreme lengths the Japanese Imperial forces were prepared to go when faced with defeat. Opposed by the might of the American fleet, rebuilt after the surprise attack at Pearl Harbour, the Imperial seal of approval was given to suicide air attacks on the enemy stalking them in the Pacific. Honoured for its purity, suicide was shrouded in ceremony and mysticism, capturing the Samurai spirit. It took several military forms when Japan withdrew from the league of Nations after occupying Manchuria in 1931. Ramming techniques were perfected alongside the development of human bombs, bullets and torpedoes, as the suicide tactics struck terror into the hearts of men trying to survive - by men wishing to die. It was the suicide pilots, dubbed black edged cherry blossoms who were the most feared in this savage arena. Captured within this rare archive footage is the nightmare chaos of the Pacific War, the air thick with tracer bullets and belching smoke as the sea foamed with devastating destruction. Although the Banzai tactics eventually led to mass suicide amongst the Japanese and the gradual depletion of men and machines resulted in defeat - the American navy had been forced into retreat by the horrific onslaught. They and the rest of the world had witnessed the Samurai mentality, where a whole nation, from the Emperor downwards was honoured to die for their cause.

World War Ii In Colour - Anchors Aweigh

    £14.79

FOR THE SAILORS AND SUBMARINES WHO FOUGHT IN WORLD WAR II, combat at sea differed radically from any previous conflict. Indeed, naval warfare changed more between 1941 and 1945 than it had in the previous 400 years. The tasks the sailors performed were far more complex and technically demanding than they ever were before. The threats they faced were also much more lethal. Whether battling Kamikazes aboard a huge warship or guiding troops to the shore off a tiny landing craft, these men faced dangers that the sailors of World War I could never have imagined.Under the waves there was a branch of the military which went quietly about his business. It was a small division of the Navy known as the Submarine Force, dubbed the Silent Service. It was a frightful existence where the elite sailors had little chance of escape when disaster struck. The submarine itself often became a steel coffin. In World War II a sailor's vessel was both his home and battleground. A place where he could find comfort and pleasure or danger and death. It was a movable fortress city at sea, but one with a heart of flesh and blood.

World War Two - Horrors Of War

    £10.85

Disc 1 Kamikaze Named after the divine wind which had twice intervened to prevent invasion by the armies of Kublai Kahn in the 13th Century, The Kamikaze pilots symbolised the extreme lengths the Japanese Imperial forces were prepared to go to when faced with defeat. They and the rest of the world had witnessed the Samurai mentality, where a whole nation, from the Emperor downwards was honoured to die for their cause.Disc 2 Gestapo - Hitler's Secret Police The very name of Hitler's secret police has become synonymous with the rule of terror that, under Heinrich Himmler, first maintained and then extended the Fuhrer's iron grip on Germany and its people. Waging relentless war on political dissidents, disaffected citizens and religious minorities alike, the Gestapo's tactics of torture, interrogation and summary execution bolstered Hitler's crumbling regime to the last and established a reputation for brutality and oppression that would endure long after the last Gestapo commandment met his fate at the gallows.Disc 3 Hitler's Secret Weapons As the Second World War progressed, the race for scientific intelligence, secrecy and detection brought a new dimension to warfare. The pilot-less flying bomb, or V1, emerged as the first of Hitler's new weapons, and for a brief but terrifying period rained death and destruction on the south of England until the RAF and anti-aircraft gunners learnt to counter the terrible Doodlebug. With Allies closing in from the West and Eastern Front crumbling, Hitler realised Germany was losing the war and his response was to give top priority to the V2. Against the background of the famous campaigns which led to his eventual defeat, this DVD shows spectacular archive footage of Hitler's secret armoury as it was being developed, tested and finally used in anger.

The Day The Earth Stood Still

    £6.85

A remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic of the same name, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL follows astrobiologist Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) as she is unceremoniously plucked from her everyday life with her stepson (Jaden Smith), and whisked away to consult the government on a top-secret matter. That matter happens to be the arrival of a massive glowing sphere in Central Park, accompanied by a towering robot-like protector dubbed Gort and an alien ambassador named Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), who takes up human form to communicate with the people of Earth. When Klaatu finds himself faced with hawkish, uncompromising officials, he goes on the run with Benson and her son as the fate of the world gradually becomes clear. Directed by Scott Derrickson (THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE), this reimagining of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is fairly reverent to the original film, while adding a number of 21st-century elements, most notably a darker tone embodied by a more threatening Gort and the chilly, contemplative Klaatu, who is portrayed with pitch-perfect remove by Reeves. While the film--and the fate of humanity--rests on Reeves's shoulders, the cast is impressively filled out by Connelly and Smith, along with Kathy Bates, John Cleese, and familiar TV actors Jon Hamm (MAD MEN) and Kyle Chandler (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS). Derrickson also tempers excellent special effects with a bleak colour palette and plenty of existential turmoil, making this EARTH a thoughtful and fascinatingly moody blockbuster.
