Rally vs Supercar? You decide! You will not believe the power & road holding of the Mitsubishi Evo or Subaru as you thrash it around the fast, but challenging circuit. This experience will leave you breathless wanting more, and there is more, as the fun doesn’t stop there, as you now get to drool over & drive the Ferrari. The sound of the V8 growl as you put this supercar through its paces. You will start to understand why most of us have grown up dreaming of an opportunity like this. Your day will begin with a welcome, introduction and briefing on circuit driving techniques. You will then receive familiarisation laps with your instructor. This is followed by a session in either a Mitsibishi Evo or Subaru and then a Ferrari. Depending on location you may get a white knuckle High Speed Passenger Ride. You will then be presented with a Commemorative Certificate. What's more depending on location, your spectators (maximum of two) will receive a free 4x4 ride. Only available in LARGE “OBLIVION” – IN THE WORDS OF THE BAND: Brann: There wasn’t too much of a battle for what would be the first song, but there were a couple things in the running to open the record. We always come out swinging. Our records always open big and fast and heavy, “Blood and Thunder” with Leviathan, “The Wolf Is Loose” with Blood Mountain. I don’t know if you call it tradition after four records, but it’s tradition — get the kids’ heads moving. For this, “Oblivion” is the perfect introduction to the album. The album’s a total journey and the opening notes of this song are perfect: slower and different for us, but still big and epic. “Comes on, Oooh! Air of foreboding. Oooh! What’s around the corner?” Perfect way to open the record. Brent: The heavy beginning. Then when the intro’s over and it comes in talking about flying beyond, I thought, “Wow, that was fucking cool.” Brann was singing; he came up with the melody, sang it to me, and said “I’ll show you what I’m talking about.” He sang it and I said, “This is so cool.” So I sang it and Brendan was like, “Stop, you’re not accenting this word right.” For some reason I couldn’t get it right. Then Troy did it and nothing sounded as good as when Brann did it as an example. I thought it was cool to open the album with the drummer singing. Comes in Brann singing, then Troy singing and I sing — everyone gets a turn except Bill. He doesn’t really care about singing. Then the guitar solo is killer, we had a great time with that playing around with some old Fender guitars and amps, trying to get some David Gilmour spirit going on. I can hear a little Jerry Cantrell at the beginning. Always been an Alice in Chains fan. Troy: That’s the initial departure. “I flew beyond the sun before it was time.” Boom! Here we are, we are floating in outer space, not knowing if we’re about to explode, die, or exist on this level. Truly taking it to the next level, which we always try to do with our music on each album. Brent had some real creepy riffs, that whole intro riff and it went from there. Lyrically, Brann wrote a whole song about floating through space and entering into oblivion, Straightforward in a bizarre way. Bill: The vocal harmonies on it, that’s what really gets me. I have a soft spot in my heart for Weezer and the Pixies, doesn’t have to be crazy guitar licks. That gets me going, so all the vocal harmonies – I can’t believe this is us! Wow! Something different and really cool for Mastodon. When it came down to deciding the first song, usually we all fight about that. Can’t make up our mind. Like making a mix tape, make sure they all flow well. Brendan told us right of the bat, “Fuck those who want to put the best song third or fourth. Put your best foot forward right off the bat.” When bands give me CDs on the road or whatever, I do listen to them all. But if the first song doesn’t get me, I’m done. Garbage. The album contains eight original compositions by Yorn, ranging in tone from the lilting opener “Relator” to the disarming, retro/futuristic “I Don’t Know What to Do” to the climactic “Someday.” Completing the collection is a powerful interpretation of the art-rock classic “I Am the Cosmos” by the late Chris Bell, co-founder of the quintessential cult band Big Star. The album had its genesis in the aftermath of—you guessed it—a breakup. The time was 2006, and Yorn was in a state of acute emotional distress. As he prepared to go out on a headlining tour behind his third studio album, Nightcrawler, he found himself in the throes of a brutal bout of insomnia. After not being able to sleep for a week, he finally dozed off, only to wake with a start just minutes later. What had awakened him was a dream. “I sat up in bed, and the whole thing was in my head, fully formed,” Yorn says, sounding as if he still doesn’t quite believe it. “I suddenly felt like I really needed to make a record in the style of Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot. Not that it had to sound like that, but it had to be a guy-and-girl conceptual thing. So then I asked myself, ‘Who’s Brigitte Bardot today? It’s Scarlett Johansson.’” Revitalized by his concept and thrilled by the prospect of bringing it to life, Yorn gave Johansson a call. Intrigued by his out-of-the-blue invitation, she decided to go for it. ”Pete told me that he’d had a dream that we recorded an album together,” she recalls, “and with that momentum, he had written eight songs that he’d wanted to record pretty low-key. I’ve always loved Pete’s voice and have been friends with him for some time. It sounded like an interesting little adventure. He used the Serge and Brigitte recordings as reference for the ambiance he was trying to capture. He liked the idea of two people vocalizing their relationship through duets.” In a flash, Yorn had worked up a dedicated batch of songs and reworked others that had called out to him in the context of the concept. He then called upon his cousin, Max Goldblatt, a bright, talented guy nine years his junior. A “renaissance man,” in Yorn’s words, Goldblatt had become an invaluable part of the artist’s musical and personal life, doing everything from manning the merch table and shooting video footage during tours to acting as an insightful sounding board for song ideas. They had wanted to work on a project together, and this one, so close to home in an emotional sense, provided the perfect opportunity. Goldblatt then suggested they bring in Sunny Levine, an emerging artist and producer (you’ll want to seek out his 2005 debut album, Love Rhino), who was full of inventively offbeat sonic ideas. Levine comes by his considerable chops naturally—his father is producer Stewart Levine; his grandfather is Quincy Jones. In Levine’s garage studio, the three collaborators worked up the tracks around Yorn’s vocals and acoustic guitar, with Levine creating the beats and treating the sounds until they were exotic and sometimes otherworldly, but unfailingly accessible.
