This seems to say that the real 'Mother and Child' are both beyond birth and beyond death and beyond time.'

First performance on 14th May 2008, at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, by Colin Currie (percussion) and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins. Commissioned jointly for Colin Currie by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. First performance on 14th May 2008, at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, by Colin Currie (percussion) and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins.NOTE FOR PERFORMANCEIn table top, the unpitched solo percussion part in the 9th movement, the scoring was initially left open. The present full score shows a suggested instrumentation which was devised by Colin Currie in conjunction with the composer. Soloists should attempt to match the timbres used, but should not feel constrained by the exact choice of instruments.COMPOSER'S NOTEThe percussion instruments used in a table of noises in some ways represent the odd things that were on my great uncle Ash's parlour table that fascinated me as a child. There is even a bottle; there was always a milk bottle with the silver top pushed in surrounded by other essentials for his life. From birth he was quite severely handicapped in one of his legs and couldn't walk too far without his trusty crutch. He kept everything he needed within arm's length. In the list of instruments for the solo part there's everything from deep log drum sounds to very high metallic chime sounds. Wood, glass, metal and a whistle. Mostly small-scale things with a large gong behind, used sparingly. I think that we managed to keep below 30 instruments in all, which I was keen to do. I didn't want scores of things that are only played once, they have to earn their keep. I didn't want to use a marimba but thought that trying to make the xylophone sound in a more expressive way would be more of a challenge. The percussionist sits for much of the time on a Cajon, a flamenco instrument which is essentially a wooden box. The player hits the front of the box in various ways, rather as you play a conga. There are guitar strings inside and bells to add to the overall colour. I would like to thank Colin Currie for the extraordinary 3 hours or so that we spent in his percussion studio trying to find potential instruments for table top. I had fully notated the rhythms for the movement, which functions as a cadenza, and knew the kinds of sounds that I wanted, but as I don't know all the instruments available we were able to collaborate in a very constructive way and make the cadenza what it is now. I see the chosen instruments as being the yardstick for all future performances.

Commissioned for a Philharmonia Music of Today portrait. For Violin and Viola. To see the summer sky for Violin and Viola falls into four movements. The first movement opens with the two instruments sounding almost as one playing very high, glassy harmonics. Gradually, an expressive viola solo emerges, with both instruments descending to their lower ranges. A livelier quasi scherzando solo for violin accompanied by viola pedal notes leads to a chorale like passage, the violin at the top of its range, whilst the viola is at its lowest. The movement ends with the two instruments coming together once again on a unison Bb and fades away almost as it has begun, but this time in the husky lower registers.The second movement is much faster and opens with a downward flurry for both instruments. A continuous pizzicato line for viola is interrupted by more violent passages in the violin. The two instruments come together in a dance-like passage before the roles are reversed. Finally an ecstatic melody surfaces in the viola and is later continued in the violin before the movement closes with the spiky figures of its opening, the two instruments ending in unison.The third movement encompasses is the most delicate and still music of the piece. After a very tranquil opening, an expressive violin melody is accompanied by a gentle rocking figure in the viola. Tentative at first, intensity and speed gather until the violin reaches stratospheric heights. Both of the instruments play at the extremes of their registers before moving to common ground for a more lively textural passage. This is followed by a passionate reminder of the movement's opening, gradually fading away to nothing.The piece ends with a Moto Perpetuo. The instruments begin by dovetailing a single line which develops into two strands before a more violent section appears, punctuated by strident double stops. Both instruments have slightly manic solo episodes before the movement quickly dies away in the single line of its opening

In rising to the challenge of writing for left hand alone, Saxton has reduced the basic material (the underlying ground bass theme) to the simplest element: a whole tone scale. Thus, the opening section gradually reveals, via a clear indication that D major is the central tonality of the work, the scale through a series of hesitant gestures, the main body of the piece bursting out of the tensions created in the intervals of the scale, especially the tritone (which plays an important part in the melodic version throughout).As with, say, the finest variation sets or grounds of a composer like Byrd, the considerable virtuosity of the keyboard writing always stems from the musical or intellectual stimulus, and is never mere empty show. This is a virtuosic response to the challenge of the imposed limitations, beautifully written for piano and culminating in a final section in which D is once more resoundingly affirmed as the centre of the work, though, with equal resonance, the tritone has the last word.Duration c. 6mins.
