The Hut Product Information
In December 1985 a young 17 year old Birmingham City full back made his first appearance at Upton Park in his side's 2-0 defeat. An unremarkable debut perhaps but West Ham manager John Lyall was impressed with what he saw that afternoon in the plucky youngster's gusty performance. So much so that in March 1988 he approached relegated Birmingham for his signature and on 2nd April 1988 Julian Dicks made his full debut for West ham in the first of 318 appearances for the club.Just over a year later after John Lyall had left the club West Ham's new manager Lou Macari recognising the talent and leadership qualities possessed by the young Dicks made him the captain of the side replacing England international Alvin Martin. Dicks hit the ground running in his new role scoring the only goal in his captain's debut against Watford on the 23rd September 1989.Macari did not survive but Julian Dicks continued to blossom in his role at the club under Billy Bonds despite a fractious and often heated relationship between the two men. Their clashes were no doubt caused by the definitive similarity between the two in style and determination and the way they saw their role in a West Ham United side increasingly eschewing its academy reputation in favour of a more physical core developed to meet the challenge of gaining promotion. After a horrific knee injury at Bristol City in his first game as captain under Billy Bonds in October 1990 Dicks came under the surgeon's knife for the first time and a lengthy lay-off ensued. Apart from discovering a talent for golf and the ability to play off scratch the absence was enormously frustrating for Dicks and his side who were bottom of the First Division when he finally returned fourteen months later at home to Sheffield United in December 1991. Typically Dicks immediately set about restoring the steel to the side scoring a late equaliser from the penalty spot.West Ham were still relegated and after another promotion season blighted by a pack of yellow cards and three reds Dicks left the side to Join Liverpool under Graham Souness in September 1993. Just thirteen months later however West Ham's new boss Harry Redknapp decided he wanted Dicks back and the new-look ambassador returned to take the captain's armband and embark upon his finest hours at the club as they began to climb up the new Premiership table.A second lay-off inevitable as the knee began to jar and Dicks returned to the golf course in April 1997 this time away until September 1998 nearly eighteen months out of the game. His return was short-lived and Dicks was forced to hang his boots at the relatively premature age of 30 in February 1999.In July 2006 Julian Dicks allowed us access to his home in Las Ramblas Murcia to witness his development as a pro on the gold circuit and to enjoy a reminiscence of his greatest and lowest moments in a memorable football career. With no stones left unturned this is a frank and at times shocking story of a game that has changed greatly since the dark days of the nineteen-eighties. If you love football this is a DVD you cannot afford to be without. Julian Dicks is a worthy candidate to be the first entry into West Ham United's new Hammers House of Heroes collection.
