Fiio E17 The Fii O E17 Alpen portable headphone amplifier with USB audio decoder (DAC) is designed for dual-functionality. The E17 Alpen both replaces PC on-board sound cards as the primary audio decoder which can lead to an increase in audio quality as well as provide high quality sound amplification and drive high-powered high-end headphones. The E17 Alpen supports different inputs including optical and coaxial. The E17 Alpen is a step up from the older Fii O E7 providing a wider support for various input devices as well as overall more functionality and control. The E17 Alpen was built to be a much more complete product than the E10. The most significant addition was the ability for it to serve as a portable headphone amplifier. With batteries built into the Alpen you can unplug it from USB and take it for a spin together with your Ipod. The E10 was limited to the USB DAC/Amp functions and the E11 amplifier only to amplification purposes. The E17 Alpen does them both and obviously this is a good thing. In addition to that they also added features such as coaxial and and toslink digital inputs making it one of the most affordable DAC with complete digital inputs. The Alpen is the successor to the E7 and there are great improvements on aspects other than just the sound. The first improvement is clearly in the amplifier section. Featuring all of Graham Slees knowledge and the know how to apply it we have a mini (portable) headphone amplifier (battery USB and plug top powered) that can take any line level source amplify and improve it to give real volume and kick to any headphones or earphones. With a form the size of an IPod Classic (6th generation) but being thicker the IPod can sit easily in the front recess of the Voyager mating together to create a formidable partnership. A number of other Pod players also fit. A separately available 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable allows the headphone out of the player to go into the line in giving excellent results and superb volume and bass. However when you buy a port to 3.5mm adapter bypassing the amp circuits of the Pod player and there inferior digital volume control this allows the Voyager to really impress. We compared it against newer and older model Solos and we liked greatly what we heard. The Voyager is light weight similar in feel to that of a classic pod player and comes fitted street-wear contour switch that is designed to improve the tonal range of street-wear headphones. For use with domestic and studio players that use Hi-Fi or studio headphones the flat position is generally more appropriate. The Voyager can be used in the office taking its input from line-out sources like the 3.5mm jack on many computers.
